Emerson Electric adopts mark-to-market pension accounting, revising prior fiscal results

EMREmerson Electric Co

Emerson Electric Co. announced a change in its method of accounting for actuarial gains and losses associated with defined benefit pension and other postretirement benefit plans, effective for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2026. The company will now recognize these items in earnings as they arise rather than amortizing them over time. This retrospective adoption increased pretax earnings by $8 million for the nine months ended June 30, 2026, and resulted in minor adjustments to previously reported fiscal years 2024 and 2025 results. The company expects a small mark-to-market gain of less than $5 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 but will exclude these volatile adjustments from its adjusted earnings per share metrics. Emerson Electric Co. operates in the industrial technology sector, providing automation solutions and software.
